Napoli Football Club had been through a lot to be the club they are now. One of the up moments was when Diego Maradona decided to join the club. How did that happen and how was history?
Before Maradona Era
On June 25, 1964, when the club’s former name was Societa Sportiva Calcio Napoli, the club started to gain more popularity as it rose higher and higher in 1964 – 1965. Bruno Pesaola who was the former player of the club also managed the club until they successfully got the Coppa Delle Alpi. It was the time when the club was back in the elite clubs in Serie A. Napoli football club finally made it to UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1976 – 1977 when they defeated South Hampton 4 – 1 to get the Anglo – Italian League Cup. But unfortunately, Napoli only got into the semi-finals in the UEFA Cup since they lost from Anderlecht. Meanwhile, in 1975 – 1976, the club won the Coppa Italia, defeating Fiorentina and Milan. This club was still pretty much consistent until the end of the 1970s. Even at the beginning of the 1980s, Napoli still performed well and got third place spots. But, they involved in a relegation battle and even slipped significantly in 1983.
On June 30, 1984, the club spent the highest amount of player transfer after acquiring one of the best players from Barcelona. He is Diego Maradona with a €12 million deal contract. After the worst performance, they tried to reform the squad slowly by putting the best players including Diego Maradona. Their ranks slowly improved and got the third place spot in 1985 – 1986. But then, the good news was more to come since they did not only secure the Serie A title in 1986 – 1987 but also defeated Atlanta with the score 4 – 0 in the Coppa Italia.
Acquiring Diego Maradona might be the most expensive deal the Napoli football club ever made. But, it turned the club’s faith well after the hard slipped before he joined the club.
